Deadline: March 6, 2022.
We are pleased to announce that the ITU Office for Africa has launched a call for nominations of new members of the Generation Connect – Africa Group (GC-AFR) being part of the “Generation Connect” global initiative, which aims to engage global youth and encourage their participation as equal partners alongside the leaders of today’s digital change.
ITU Youth Strategy
The ITU Youth Strategy aims to improve and have a real impact on the lives of young people around the world, and to ensure meaningful participation of youth in ITU as key stakeholders in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Generation Connect aims to engage global youth and encourage their participation as equal partners alongside the leaders of today’s digital change, empowering young people with the skills and opportunities to advance their vision of a connected future.
Generation Connect is the overarching initiative of the ITU Youth Strategy on the journey to the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-21) and the Generation Connect Global Youth Summit.
Generation Connect – Africa Youth Group
The Generation Connect – Africa Youth Group (GC-AFR) aims at providing a unique participative process for youth to contribute to the work of ITU and the African Telecommunication Union (ATU) in the continent. It offers African youth a virtual platform to discuss opportunities and challenges related to digital technologies. Through this platform, young people are consulted and able to share with ITU-ATU membership their interests, concerns and perspectives on digital transformation.
On behalf of ITU and the Generation Connect team we would like to thank you for the time, energy, and insight that you have already committed to the Generation Connect – Africa Youth Group.
What we have achieved so far
Between January 2021 and June 2021, ITU created the Generation Connect – Africa Youth Group (GC-AFR) comprised of up to 26 active Generation Connect Digital Youth Envoys.
The role of the GC – Africa Youth Group is to share with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Membership their interests, concerns, and perspectives on digital transformation and discuss ICT related opportunities and challenges within their region.
During the first phase of engagement, GC – Africa Youth Group produced a crowd-sourced Outcome Document presenting the needs and interests of youth with respect to telecommunication development. GC – Africa Regional Youth Group shared their perspectives with Member States by participating within the Regional Preparatory Meeting from Africa (RPM -AFR) for WTDC-21 held virtually from 29 to 30 March 2021.
What we are going to do next
As we now look towards the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2021 (WTDC-21), our ambition for the second phase is to continue to engage with members of the GC – Africa Youth Group in our journey to the WTDC-21 Generation Connect Global Youth Summit.
This was originally set to take place in November 2021 but has been postponed until June 2022 as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The objectives of the Generation Connect initiative over the period July 2021 to July 2022 that give details on the cross-cutting ambitions for Generation Connect and what the initiative aims to achieve at a global level over this period will be shared soon.
