PROFESSIONAL LIFE
Anifa enrolled in a fashion design course her junior year of high school and began working in retail after graduation. She learned how to incorporate technology into her designs by watching YouTube and other online resources.
Mvuemba wanted to go to fashion school in New York like all the greats, but her parents wanted her to study law or medicine, not fashion. They weren’t always the best supporters; her father told her she’d never succeed because she was African. She did end up studying fashion at a small college in Maryland, but it wasn’t the right fit for her. So much so that she dropped out and quit her job to pursue her dream.
Hanifa, her brand, was founded in 2012, and she was named one of Fast Company’s most creative people in business. Her fashion label is a modern clothing line with a variety of shapes, textures, and styles. She was previously known as a customs and alterations seamstress. Anifa Mvuemba began on Instagram by sewing a dress for herself with her limited sewing experience, and she has since expanded. She sewed clothes for herself and her friends. Mvuemba had never seen herself in a store and had no idea that this would lead to the creation of her inclusive brand, Hanifa.
One of her first big breaks came when Beyonce included Hanifa on her “DIRECTORY OF BLACK OWNED BUSINESSES.” Then Hanifa took off, with celebrities such as Zendaya wearing her clothes in major magazines.
During the 2020 pandemic, Anifa Mvuemba decided to upload a digital runway for her new line titled “Pink Label Congo,” but she went a step further than just having pictures of it. Her viral video was created after she studied several programmes and hired a team of programmers. Her Congolese-inspired line was animated so that they had to walk to the “runway” on their own. They move so naturally, giving everything a high fashion look. When it was uploaded, it received over 1 million views, raising the bar for designers’ future releases(Essence).
Pink Label Congo aims to be a line that empowers women and makes them feel good about themselves when they wear it. That is what Anifa hopes to accomplish with her designs in the future. She hopes to open a manufacturing company in the next five years where she can help emerging designers like herself find resources to thrive in the industry.
